Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, or SCID, is a rare and life-threatening genetic disorder that significantly weakens the body's immune system. It is often referred to as "bubble boy disease" and is characterized by a profound deficiency in both T cells and B cells, the key components of the immune system responsible for fighting infections. This results in a heightened susceptibility to various infections, which can be life-threatening.
At BC, we are dedicated to providing clarity, compassion, and effective solutions for individuals and families facing the challenges of SCID. Our mission is to empower those affected by this complex condition with the knowledge and care they need to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Symptoms of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)
1. Frequent, severe, and often recurrent infections, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections
2. Failure to thrive and poor growth
3. Chronic diarrhoea
4. Skin rashes or infections
5. Oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth)
6. Absence of normal immune responses, such as fever, in response to infections
Treatment for SCID at BCI:
1. Stem Cell Transplantation: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for SCID. It involves replacing the defective immune system with healthy stem cells from a compatible donor.
2. Gene Therapy: Innovative gene therapies are being explored as a potential treatment for certain forms of SCID. These therapies aim to correct the genetic defects responsible for the condition.
3. Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy: In some cases, SCID patients may receive immunoglobulin therapy to provide temporary immune support while awaiting a transplant or gene therapy.
